Open on a shot of a man's stapled hands. As the camera pulls back, we s= ee=20 it's Lex, sitting behind his desk with a none-too-pleased expression on hi= s=20 face.=20

Lex: (Controlled anger) I was under the impression that t= he=20 deal had closed.=20

Lawyer: (Remorseful) Mr. Luthor, I'm sorry.=20

Lex: I don't want "I'm sorry." I want to know how the hell my fa= ther=20 beat me out of a 150-million dollar contract that you assured me was a don= e=20 deal!=20

Lawyer: The only way they would have known the exact dollar amou= nt was=20 if they had inside information.=20

Lex: (Anger rising) And since you and I were the only one= s who=20 knew about it, and I certainly didn't tell my father, that leaves you in a= very=20 uncomfortable position.=20

Lawyer: If I no longer have your confidence, I'll tender my=20 resignation in the morning.=20

Lex gets up from behind the desk and walks angrily toward his lawyer.=20

Lex: (Threateningly) My father would want more than your= =20 resignation. He'd hobble you at the knees and do everything in his power t= o=20 insure you'd never work in the corporate world again.=20

The lawyer swallows fearfully, and slowly turns to leave. As he does, L= ex=20 calls after him, his voice still angry, but not threatening. As Lex speaks= , the=20 lawyer turns to face him.=20

Lex: But I'm not my father. All I want to know is how he found o= ut.=20 And how I can stop it from ever happening again.=20

The lawyer nods in understanding, a grateful look on his face as he rea= lizes=20 Lex is not going to destroy him. The lawyer turns and walks quickly from t= he=20 room.=20

Lex watches his lawyer leave, then turns and leans on his desk, his fac= e a=20 mask of controlled fury. He glances down and his gaze falls on a magazine= =20 featuring a picture of himself and Lionel, with the headline, "Will The So= n=20 Surpass The Father?". With a growl of anger, Lex sweeps his arm across his= desk,=20 knocking everything--magazine, papers, computer monitor, flower vase--to t= he=20 floor in frustration.=20

Lex collects himself, then walks over to the mess. He kneels down and b= egins=20 gathering up the pieces. He picks up a flower bud which was inside the vas= e of=20 flowers on his desk. As he looks at it, he notices a tiny, thin needle sti= cking=20 out from the top of the bud. He pulls the needle out to reveal a tiny list= ening=20 device hidden inside the flower. A look of realization crosses Lex's face = as he=20 glances around his office, now knowing how Lionel got his inside informati= on.=20

Cut to a shot of the Lex's study, sometime later. The office is in a st= ate of=20 disarray--tables overturned or covered with objects from other parts of th= e=20 room. Rock music blares from the stereo as we see Lex tearing apart his=20 bookcases, flinging the books to the floor. Glancing at a painting on the = wall,=20 Lex reaches down and picks up a metal bar (it looks like a leg from a smal= l=20 desktop globe or even a small end table of some sort) from his desk. He wa= lks=20 over to the painting and uses the edge of bar to rip the canvas to shreds.= =20

Cut to a shot of the side door into Lex's office. Clark opens the door,= =20 pushing a chair out of the way, and glances around in confusion at the tra= shed=20 office as Lex continues to rip apart the painting.=20

Clark: (Confused) Lex, what's going on?=20

Lex glances up, but doesn't answer. He drops the painting and puts a fi= nger=20 to his lips, shushing Clark. Walking over to the stereo, Lex turns the mus= ic up=20 several notches, then walks toward Clark.=20

Lex: Big Brother is listening, or should I say "Big Daddy"?=20 (Indicates his desk) These are just what I found so far.=20

We see several listening devices and tiny cameras scattered across Lex'= s=20 desk. Lex picks up one and shows it to Clark, who takes it and examines it= .=20

Lex: State of the art in high-tech surveillance. I'm going to ha= ve to=20 bring in a team of experts to sweep the rest of mansion.=20

Clark: (disbelieving) What are you saying, your dad's spying on = you?=20

Lex: I had the inside track on a multi-million dollar contract. = At the=20 last minute, LuthorCorp manages to underbid me. You do the math.=20

Clark: Lex, you got to calm down...=20

Lex: (Angrily) Don't tell me to calm down, Clark! How wou= ld you=20 feel if someone were listening to every private word you uttered, learning= all=20 your secrets?=20

Clark considers this for a moment, as Lex goes back to trashing the off= ice=20 looking for bugs. Clark glances around, and focuses his X-Ray vision on Le= x's=20 bookshelves. His eyes widen at what he sees.=20

Clark: (A bit worried) Lex. These devices could be anywhe= re.=20 They could be in the sofa cushions or the heating vents.=20

Lex: I already checked.=20

Clark: What about your stereo?=20

Lex walks over to his bookshelf, and peers through the glass doors prot= ecting=20 the small CD/stereo system. From behind the glass, we see his expression t= urn to=20 fury as he spies the small camera hidden inside the stereo. He raises the = metal=20 bar in his hand and swings it toward the stereo. As he smashes the stereo,= the=20 screen suddenly goes to snow as the camera is destroyed.=20

[Opening credits]=20

Cut to a shot of a framed photograph of the Kent family, looking happy.= As=20 the camera pans down the hallway and into the kitchen, we see Jonathan sta= nding=20 next to the stove, putting something on a plate as Clark wipes down the co= unters=20 with a dishtowel. Finishing at the stove, Jonathan takes his plate toward = the=20 table as Clark turns around.=20

Clark: (Taking Jonathan's plate) Hey, Dad, you want me to= make=20 this extra crispy for you?=20

Jonathan: (Taking the plate of fried chicken back) No tha= nks,=20 but if I do say so myself, I've cooked this bird to a golden brown perfect= ion,=20 just the way your mother likes it.=20

We see a large picnic basket, and various dishes, scattered across the= =20 kitchen table. Jonathan starts to pack the basket.=20

Clark: (Handing one of the bowls of food to Jonathan) So = how=20 come you guys aren't going to Metropolis this year for your anniversary?=20

Jonathan: (Dryly) Well it seems to me last year while we = were=20 out of town a certain somebody had a party at our house?=20

Clark looks sheepishly at his father before continuing.=20

Clark: Yeah, you know what, I think a picnic sounds perfect.=20

Martha descends the stairs, dressed in a business suit with a overnight= bag=20 in her hand.=20

Martha: (Disappointed) So do I. But I can't go.=20

Jonathan: (Disbelieving) Wait--wait a minute. What do you= mean=20 you can't go?=20

Martha: Lionel just called. LuthorCorp's finalizing a major=20 acquisition tomorrow, and he needs me to go with him to his Metropolis off= ice to=20 prepare.=20

Clark: Didn't you tell him it's your anniversary, Mom?=20

Martha: (To Jonathan) I'll be back tomorrow night. (hopef= ul) We=20 can celebrate then. Any restaurant you want.=20

Jonathan: (Angry) What are you going to do, put it on you= r=20 LuthorCorp expense account?=20

Martha: (Sighing) Oh, Jonathan. You can't make me feel an= y=20 worse about it than I already do. I know how hard you worked planning toda= y, but=20 I don't have a choice. He's my boss.=20

Jonathan: (Indignant) I'm your husband.=20

Martha: Believe me, I'd much rather spend the day with you, but = this=20 job is important to me.=20

Jonathan: I never thought I'd see the day when this job was more= =20 important to you than this family.=20

Clark: You know what? Dad's right. You shouldn't be working for = Lionel=20 Luthor anyway.=20

Jonathan: (Frustrated sigh) Clark...=20

Clark: No. The only way that he got this major acquisition was b= y=20 spying on Lex.=20

Jonathan: (Angrily) Clark! This is between your mother an= d I.=20

Martha: (Pleading for understanding) Jonathan, how many t= imes=20 have you put this farm above our personal lives?=20

Jonathan: That is different, Martha.=20

Martha: Why? I'm working toward the same goal--our family's fina= ncial=20 security. I wish this job didn't bother you so much.=20

Jonathan clenches his jaw in anger, as Clark looks on uncomfortably. Ma= rtha=20 glances from Jonathan to Clark as the tension fills the room.=20

Martha: (Resignedly) I have to go.=20

Martha turns and leaves, slamming the door behind her, as Jonathan and = Clark=20 watch her go.=20

Cut to a shot of Lex's study doors. Lionel flings the doors open and st= rides=20 into the study.=20

Lionel: (Impatiently) All right, Lex. What's so urgent.=20

The camera pans up and we see Lex up on the landing above the office.=20

Lex: (Casually) Remember the new American embassy in Mosc= ow?=20

Lionel: Uh-huh.=20

Lex: (Descending the stairs) It was so riddled with=20 surveillance hardware, the State Department had to abandon it.=20

Lionel: I've got a meeting, Lex. I don't have time to chat about= =20 foreign affairs.=20

Lex: (Pointedly) Actually the topic is domestic. (indicat= es=20 their surroundings) I've discovered a bug problem right here in my very ow= n=20 home.=20

Lionel: Ha-ha-ha-ha. Corporate espionage? It's a fact of modern= =20 business, Lex. I'm surprised your security was so lax.=20

Lionel turns and begins walking away, toward the exit.=20

Lex: (Matter of factly) Still, it's hard to imagine how t= he=20 perpetrator could have gained access to the mansion.=20

At Lex's words, Lionel stops in his tracks.=20

Lionel: (Sniffing the air a few times) Do I detect a fain= t=20 whiff of innuendo?=20

Lex: (Walking toward Lionel) Of course not, Dad. I just w= anted=20 to congratulate you on winning that contract.=20

Lionel: (Amused) Oh, is that what this is about? Making a= n=20 excuse for your defeat? Hmm?=20

Lex just stares coldly at Lionel.=20

Lionel: (Continuing) Because I don't have time for excuse= s.=20

With that, Lionel turns and heads for the door.=20

Lionel: (Pausing in the doorway) As for your bug problem,= I=20 suggest you call an exterminator.=20

Lex just smirks as Lionel exits the office. As Lex watches Lionel leave= ,=20 Lex's cell phone begins to ring. Lex walks over and picks it up, attaching= a=20 small voice modulator to the mouthpiece before answering it.=20

Lex: (Answering phone) This is Mr. Green.=20

Cut to a shot of an Asian man, Kern, in a blue workers jumpsuit, standi= ng=20 next to a van outside.=20

Kern: I finished the appraisal that you requested, and we're rea= dy to=20 close escrow.=20

Lex: (Computer distorted voice over Kern's cell phone) Ho= w soon=20 can you complete the transaction?=20

Kern: (Opening the van door and climbing inside) Today. W= e're=20 on site and ready to roll. We can get you full access to the property--aud= io and=20 video. Do we have a go?=20

Cut to a shot of Lex in his office. He pauses, reaching down and pickin= g up=20 one of the listening devices off his desk. He studies it for a moment, thi= nking.=20

Kern: (Over Lex's cell phone) Mr. Green, are you there? M= r.=20 Green?=20

Lex: (Firmly) Do it.=20

Cut to a shot inside the van.=20

Kern: (Closing cell phone) We're on.=20

As the van pulls away, we see it where it was parked--outside the Lutho= rCorp=20 headquarters.=20

Cut to a shot inside Clark's loft. He's reading a book, "Families in Cr= isis:=20 Healing the Rift" by Dr. Justin Bishop. Clark glances up as he hears foots= teps=20 approaching the loft, and we see Lana, clad in a pink wispy dress climbing= the=20 stairs.=20

Clark: (Taking in Lana's appearance) Wow.=20

Lana: (Unsure) You don't think it's too much?=20

Clark: That depends who you're wearing it for?=20

Lana: What do you call your newly discovered biological father's= wife?=20

Clark: (Considering) Well, personally I'd call her Mrs. S= mall,=20 but that's just me. So you're really going to see her?=20

Lana: (Nodding) Yeah. I kind of feel like I'm auditioning= . What=20 if she votes me off the island?=20

Clark: (Reassuringly) Lana, anyone who gets to know you=20 realizes how special you are.=20

Lana smiles at Clark gratefully, touched by his words.=20

Lana: Thanks, Clark. That's--that's really sweet of you to say.= =20

Clark: You're always the one telling me I need to be more honest= .=20

Lana: (Chuckling) Yeah. (Pauses) Well, you know, m= aybe=20 you see me that way because we're friends, but to Jennifer Small, I'm just= her=20 husband's illegitimate daughter trying to worm her way into his life.=20

Clark: Lana, if she accepts you, then great. But if not, that's = her=20 loss. Besides, isn't your priority Henry? That's been going pretty well.=20

Lana: Yeah. Uh, but, maybe it's the whole adopted kid fantasy th= ing,=20 but I can't help thinking that if I don't screw it up, I might have an act= ual=20 family.=20

Clark: Look, Lana, I want you to have everything you wish for, I= =20 really do.... Just because you have a family doesn't mean every day's a pi= cnic.=20

Lana: (Joking) Unless of course, you're a Kent.=20

Clark: (Sadly) Well, to be honest, my parents aren't real= ly=20 getting along right now.=20

Lana: (Understandingly) I'm sorry Clark. Do you want to t= alk=20 about it?=20

Clark: (Shaking his head) Later. You've got someplace to = be.=20

Lana: (Small smile) Okay.=20

Lana laughs nervously and heads for the exit, then stops and turns back= to=20 Clark.=20

Lana: Clark, whatever it is, your parents will work it out.=20

Clark smiles back in gratitude.=20

Lana: After all, some people are just meant to be together.=20

Lana turns and exits, as Clark thinks about what she said.=20

Cut to a shot of the Luthor Mansion. Inside, Lex is dialing a number on= his=20 cell-phone. Clark enters, and Lex disconnects the call.=20

Clark: Lex, what's the most romantic restaurant in Metropolis?=20

Lex: (Chuckling a bit) Well, I'm sure there are a lot of= =20 opinions on that Clark, but, uh, personally I'd have to go with Le Petite = Fleur.=20

The two men walk down the hall and enter Lex's study.=20

Clark: Think you could score me a reservation for tonight?=20

Lex: Who's the lucky girl?=20

Clark: My mom. It's my parents' anniversary, and my dad had a pi= cnic,=20 but now she's in Metropolis with your dad.=20

Lex turns around at Clark's words.=20

Lex: (Concerned) They're in Metropolis? At LuthorCorp? On= a=20 Sunday?=20

Clark: Yeah. Can you believe that he makes her work on her=20 anniversary.=20

Lex: (Dryly) To my father, there's no such thing as a per= sonal=20 life. (Hurriedly) Listen, Clark, since it is their anniversary, I t= hink I=20 could do you one better than the reservations.=20

Clark: (Curiously) What do you have in mind?=20

Lex: Well, if you'll excuse me a minute to make a few few calls,= I'll=20 explain.=20

Lex exits the office.=20

Cut to a shot of the LuthorCorp building. Inside, Kern and the team (Two=20 men named Nicky and Pine, and a woman named Bishio) that Lex has hired= ,=20 disguised as a cleaning crew, enter the offices and begin to work planting= bugs,=20 tapping phone lines, and hacking into LuthorCorp's computer system. Kern's= cell=20 phone begins to ring, and he answers it.=20

Kern: (Answering phone) Kern.=20

Lex: (Computer distorted voice over Kern's phone) This is= =20 Green.=20

Cut to a shot of Lex, on his cell phone at the mansion.=20

Lex: (Firmly) I want you to terminate now.=20

Cut to a shot of Kern back in the offices.=20

Kern: You realize you'll be forfeiting your deposit.=20

Lex: (Computer distorted voice on Kern's phone) There are= =20 people in the building. I want you all out.=20

Kern: I understand.=20

Kern hangs up his cell phone and turns to his crew. Pine, who has been= =20 studying a blueprint of the office, picks up a remote control device off o= f the=20 desk.=20

Kern: Our client has cancelled the project. He believes there ar= e=20 people in the building.=20

Pine takes the remote and aims it at a wall, pressing a button. The wal= ls=20 slide back to reveal a large steel vault hidden behind the walls. He walks= over=20 to examine the vault.=20

Kern: What are you doing?=20

Pine: You think the rest of us broke into the office of one of t= he=20 richest men in the world just to plant a few bugs?=20

Kern looks on in shock.=20

Pine: We ain't leaving this place until we empty that vault.=20

Kern glances around at the other team members, who quickly avert their = eyes.=20

Kern: (Addressing members of the team) Bishop. Nicky, how= long=20 have we worked together? We're not thieves, We were hired to do a specific= job.=20

Pine strikes Kern hard in the back of the head with the remote. Bishop= =20 flinches as Kern falls to the ground unconscious.=20

Pine: The job description's just been changed. (to Nicky) Go out= and=20 check the other offices. (to Bishop) Bishop, get the torch.=20

Cut to a shot of one of the other offices. Martha and Lionel sit on a c= ouch=20 in front of a low coffee table, which is covered with papers.=20

Martha: (Guiding Lionel's hand to one of the papers) Sign= here.=20

Lionel signs, and Martha gathers the papers.=20

Martha: Okay.=20

Martha gets up from the couch and places the papers on the desk.=20

Lionel: (curiously) Martha?=20

Martha: (Flatly) Yes?=20

Lionel: Is something wrong?=20

Martha: No. (Pauses) It's just when you said there was wo= rk=20 that couldn't wait until Monday, I didn't think I'd be the only one here.= =20

Lionel: I thought you'd like to work in your new office.=20

Martha: New office? I-I don't understand.=20

Lionel: (Sitting on the edge of the desk) Look inside the= top=20 left-hand drawer of the desk.=20

Martha slides open the drawer. Inside is an ornate red box. She glances= at=20 Lionel curiously before removing the box and setting it on the desk.=20

Lionel: Go ahead. Open it.=20

Martha opens the box to reveal an expensive looking gold watch with a d= iamond=20 encrusted face. Martha gasps as she removes the watch from the box.=20

Lionel: (Chuckling) Turn it over.=20

Martha turns the watch over. On the back of the watch is an engraving.= =20

Martha: (reading the engraving aloud) "To Martha, with de= ep=20 affection, L.L."=20

Lionel: I'm promoting you, Martha, which means I'll be needing y= ou=20 more in Metropolis, which means you'll need someplace to work.=20

Martha: (Shaking her head slowly) Lionel....I'm flattered= ,=20 really, but...I can't accept this. (Pauses) And, as far as working = in=20 Metropolis, this job is putting enough strain on my family as it is.=20

Lionel leans in closer and runs his hand down Martha's arm slowly, befo= re=20 taking her hand in his own.=20

Lionel: Martha, I know how much you've given up to be, uh, a far= mers=20 wife, but with your brains and your talent, don't you deserve to make your= own=20 ambitions a priority for a change?=20

Martha just shakes her head, unsure of how to answer.=20

Lionel: We'll discuss it over dinner.=20

Martha just opens and closes her mouth, speechless and a little upset.= =20

Suddenly, the office door flies open. Nicky enters, pointing a gun at M= artha=20 and Lionel.=20

Nicky: Hey lovebirds, wrong place, wrong time.=20

Lionel: Who is it? Martha?=20

Martha just looks between Lionel and Nicky, fear written all over her f= ace.=20

Nicky: (Approaching Lionel) Get your hands up. Let's go! = Get=20 'em in the air! Now!=20

Slowly, Martha and Lionel raise their hands.=20

Cut to a shot of the Kent kitchen. Jonathan enters and strides quickly= =20 through the room.=20

Jonathan: Clark. (Louder, calling upstairs toward Clark's roo= m)=20 Clark! I don't suppose you have any idea why there's a helicopter parked i= n our=20 front yard, do you?=20

Clark and Lex enter from the living room. Clark holds up a suit in a pl= astic=20 dry cleaner's bag.=20

Clark: (Happily) Lex is going to take you to Metropolis s= o you=20 can take Mom to dinner.=20

Jonathan: (Angrily to Lex) Oh, so this was your idea, was= it?=20

Lex: (Calmly) Actually, it was Clark's. I just offered to= =20 provide the transportation.=20

Jonathan: (Angrily slamming a tool down onto the table) L= ook, I=20 don't know how things work in your house, but around here, we think it's=20 important to respect other people's privacy.=20

Clark: (Hurriedly) Dad...=20

Lex: (Interrupting) It's all right, Clark. (walks towa= rd=20 Jonathan until he is standing face to face with him) Mr. Kent, ever si= nce=20 the day I moved to Smallville, I've done nothing but try to be a friend to= you.=20 And in return, you do nothing but lecture me with sanctimonious platitudes= . I'm=20 done listening to them.=20

Lex and Jonathan stare at each other for a moment, before Lex turns, gl= ances=20 at Clark, and leaves the room.=20

Clark: (Angrily) Dad, that was *not* fair.=20

Jonathan: Everything was just fine in this family until we let t= he=20 Luthors into our lives.=20

Jonathan angrily turns and heads for the back door.=20

Clark: That wasn't Lex's fault.=20

Jonathan: (Raising his voice in anger) I appreciate your= =20 concern, but it is not your job to fix everything!=20

Jonathan pauses, collecting himself and speaking in a lower tone.=20

Jonathan: So just stay out of it.=20

With that, Jonathan heads back out to the barn, slamming the kitchen do= or=20 behind him.=20

Cut to a shot of a Bishop using a blowtorch to cut through the door of = the=20 vault in the LuthorCorp offices. Nearby, Kern is on the floor, tied up. Pi= ne=20 stands back, watching Bishop attempt to break into the vault. Nicky enters= the=20 office, pushing Martha and Lionel into the room.=20

Nicky: Hey, Pine, I got a little present for you. Lionel Luthor.= =20

Pine: Good. He just saved us a whole lot of time. Get him to ope= n the=20 vault.=20

Kern: It's too late, genius. You already burned the plate.=20

Pine and Kern glare at each other. Pine glances over at Bishop, who sil= ently=20 confirms that Kern is right.=20

Suddenly, a security alarm goes off, beeping loudly. Pine walks over to= the=20 room's security monitors and checks them.=20

Pine: How the hell did the cops get tipped off?=20

Lionel shifts his hand, concealing a blinking light in his palm, and at= tempts=20 to move whatever he has in his hand back up into his sleeve. Pine notices = the=20 movement and stalks quickly over to Lionel.=20

Pine: (Threateningly) What do you got in your hand?=20

Pine grabs Lionel's hand and tries to force it open, but Lionel resists= and=20 the two men struggle.=20

Pine: Open it up!=20

Martha: (Upset) Stop it! You're hurting him! Lionel, plea= se.=20

Lionel stops resisting and Pine pries Lionel's hand open. In Lionel's p= alm=20 rests a small silver cylinder, with a flashing red light. Pine holds it up= ,=20 examining it.=20

Kern: Panic button. State of the art.=20

Lionel gives a small, smug smile.=20

Pine: (To Nicky) Check him out.=20

Nicky: (To Lionel) Let's go.=20

Nicky moves to frisk Lionel.=20

Lionel: A man in my position can never take too many precautions= .=20

Martha: (Pleading) Why don't you just let us go? You can = avoid=20 adding kidnapping to the breaking and entering charges!=20

Lionel: You should listen to this woman. I find her advice invar= iably=20 sound.=20

Nicky: I think he's all right.=20

Kern: (Angry) We should've gotten out when I said! If you= 'd=20 kept to the plan, none of this would have happened!=20

Pine sighs, an annoyed look on his face. He pulls his gun from his wais= tband=20 and turns around, calmly shooting Kern in the chest. Martha screams and ju= mps=20 into Lionel's arms. Nicky and Bishop both pull their guns out and aim them= at=20 Pine. Pine pulls out another gun and aims one at Nickey, and one at Bishop= .=20

Nicky: (Yelling) What the hell is the matter with you!=20

Bishop: (Yelling>) Are you crazy?=20

Pine: (Yelling) Shut up!=20

Bishop: (Yelling) You shut up!=20

Nicky: (Yelling) What are you doing?!=20

Pine: (Yelling)Shut up!=20

Bishop: (Yelling) Are you crazy?!=20

Pine: (Yelling) Shuuuuttt Uuup! Shut Up!=20

Nicky:(Yelling) Drop it now!=20

Pine: Just relax, all right? Relax. Let's take it easy. I'm putt= ing my=20 guns down, all right?=20

Pine slowly lowers his guns.=20

Pine: We're just going to get the money, and we're going to get = the=20 hell out of here, all right?=20

Bishop takes a deep breath, then slowly lowers her gun. Martha clings t= o=20 Lionel in fear. Pine turns back to Nicky, who still has his gun aimed at h= im.=20 Pine and Nicky stare each other down for a moment, then Nicky slowly lower= s his=20 gun. Pine sighs in relief.=20

Pine: (To Bishop) Back to work on that vault.=20

Bishop moves back to continue trying to open the vault.=20

Lionel: (Still holding Martha) You're wasting your time, = you=20 know. There's nothing in there of value to any of you.=20

Pine: (To Nicky) You keep your eyes on them. We'll need t= hem=20 later for leverage.=20

Nicky glances down at Kern's body, then back up at Pine. Martha continu= es to=20 cling to Lionel, trembling with fear.=20

Cut to a shot of the Talon's marquee, which reads "Half Price Lattes Al= l=20 Week". Inside, we see Lana, Henry Small, and Jennifer Small seated at one = of the=20 tables.=20

Lana: (Starting to get up from her seat) Uh, more coffee?= =20

Jennifer: Henry, why don't you get it? Give Lana and I a chance = to get=20 a word in.=20

Henry: (Gathering the coffee mugs) Sure. I'll be right ba= ck.=20

Henry heads off to the counter, leaving Lana and Jennifer alone. Lana s= miles=20 at Jennifer nervously and shifts uncomfortably in her seat. Jennifer retur= ns the=20 nervous smile, then glances around the room.=20

Jennifer: This really is a cute place, Lana. You've got great ta= ste.=20

Lana: (Sincerely) Thank you. And thank you for agreeing t= o meet=20 with me. I know it can't be easy for you.=20

Jennifer: (Hesitantly) Lana, you seem like a very togethe= r=20 young woman, which is why I feel like I can be completely candid with you.= =20

Jennifer leans across the table toward Lana.=20

Jennifer: I don't want you getting too close to Henry.=20

Lana stares at her, stunned. She swallows hard a couple of times, then= =20 speaks.=20

Lana: Mrs. Small, I-I don't know what you think, but I am not tr= ying=20 to interfere with your family.=20

Jennifer: (Shaking her head) That's not what I'm worried = about.=20

Lana looks at her questioningly.=20

Jennifer: Lana, when I married Henry, he was the editor of the l= aw=20 review. He was going to run for Congress. Now he runs a law practice for l= ost=20 causes out of our living room.=20

Lana: (Impassioned) He believes in what he's doing.=20

Jennifer: Yeah, until it gets too difficult, or he loses=20 interest...which he always does.=20

Jennifer stares at Lana, trying to make sure Lana understands the meani= ng=20 behind her words. Lana looks a little stunned and sick.=20

Lana: (Sadly) You think he'll lose interest in me.=20

Jennifer: (Matter of factly) Henry has two children in bo= arding=20 school. He never calls them. And even when they're home, he doesn't have t= ime=20 for them. Or anyone else.=20

Lana: (Upset) Why are you telling me this?=20

Jennifer: I'm trying to do you a favor. I do not want to see you= get=20 hurt the next time Henry's priorities suddenly change.=20

Lana blinks back a few tears as Henry approaches the table with their c= offee.=20

Henry: So...what have you two ladies been talking about?=20

Lana gives Henry and uncomfortable smile and looks at Jennifer, neither= of=20 them answering Henry's question.=20

Cut to a shot outside LuthorCorp. A reporter stands on the corner, fili= ng a=20 news report. Behind her, police cars and swat teams race to the building.= =20

Reporter: We are live at the LuthorCorp tower, where sometime ea= rlier=20 this afternoon, armed gunmen apparently entered the building and are now h= olding=20 LuthorCorp chairman and CEO Lionel Luthor hostage.=20

Cut to a shot of Clark and Jonathan in the Kent farmhouse. Clark is wat= ching=20 TV and Jonathan is reading a book. As the report comes on, Clark watches=20 worriedly, and Jonathan lowers his book. Clark turns the TV up and Jonatha= n=20 comes to sit next to Clark, neither of them taking their eyes off the TV.= =20

Reporter: (Continuing) Along with at least one unidentifi= ed=20 female employee.=20

Clark and Jonathan both stand up when they hear this news. Jonathan ins= tantly=20 heads to grab his jacket and leave.=20

Clark: (Fearfully) Mom.=20

Clark starts to follow his father.=20

Jonathan: (Determined) If anybody tries to hurt your moth= er...=20

Clark: (Equally determined) I'm not going to let that hap= pen.=20

Clark starts to storm out the door, but Jonathan steps in front of him = and=20 stops him.=20

Jonathan:Clark. Clark! (Pauses) I'm not going to try and = stop=20 you, but I want you to be careful. Now, I'm going to follow you in the tru= ck.=20 I'll get there just as soon as I can.=20

Clark: Dad, there's a faster way for you to get to Metropolis.=20 (Pauses) You just have to talk to Lex.=20

Jonathan looks at Clark, knowing what he is suggesting.=20

Cut to a shot of the LuthorCorp office. Pine watches Bishop trying to c= ut=20 through the vault. Nearby, Kern's cell-phone begins to ring. Pine reaches = down=20 and opens Kern's pocket and removes the phone.=20

Pine: (To Nicky, indicating Kern's body) Get him out of h= ere.=20

Pine walks off to the side and answers the phone.=20

Pine: (Answering the phone) What.=20

Lex: (Computer distorted voice on the phone) I hired you = to bug=20 an office...=20

Cut to a shot of Lex, on his cell-phone in his office. He slams his lap= top=20 shut in anger.=20

Lex: (Continuing) ...not create a media circus!=20

Pine: (Over Lex's phone) Yeah, well, we ran into a little= snag.=20

Lex: Who is this?=20

Cut to a shot of Pine on the phone.=20

Pine: Tell you what, Mr. Green... you show me your caller ID and= I'll=20 show you mine.=20

Cut to a shot of Lex in his office. He's quite angry .=20

Lex: (Demanding) I want to talk to Kern, now.=20

Cut to a shot of Pine. In the background, we see Nicky dragging Kern's = body=20 from the office.=20

Pine: Yeah, well Kern's definitely not in charge anymore.=20

With that, Pine hangs up on Lex.=20

Lex stares at the phone in anger, but is interrupted by a knock on his = study=20 door. Jonathan slowly enters the study.=20

Lex: Mr. Kent. I take it you've seen the news?=20

Jonathan slowly closes the door behind him.=20

Jonathan: (Regretfully) If I hadn't been so bullheaded=20 and...taken you up on your offer, Martha and I would probably be on our wa= y to=20 dinner. Instead...=20

Jonathan pauses, unable to continue.=20

Lex: (Understandingly) Believe me, there's plenty of blam= e to=20 go around.=20

Jonathan nods, then takes a deep breath, exhaling slowly.=20

Jonathan: Lex, I was wondering...=20

Jonathan hestiates, just looking at Lex as he tries to ask for Lex's he= lp=20 without actually asking. Lex just stares back at him, and the two men stud= y each=20 other for a moment. Jonathan swallows hard and attempts to ask again.=20

Jonathan: I was wondering if I---=20

Lex: (Interrupting) Sure, Mr. Kent. I'll give you a helic= opter=20 ride to Metropolis.=20

Jonathan just nods slightly.=20

Cut to a shot outside LuthorCorp Tower. Police put up barriers to keep = the=20 crowd back. Clark comes up from the back of the crowd, and slips past the= =20 barrier. He gazes up at the building, trying to figure out some way inside= =20 without being seen. After a moment, a police officer comes up and pulls hi= m=20 away.=20

Officer: Young man, you too. Stay behind the barricades.=20

Clark wanders around to the side, watching as swat teams position thems= elves=20 outside the building. Glancing down, Clark notices he's standing on a grat= e=20 which leads to an underground tunnel--perhaps access to the building. Afte= r=20 looking around and making sure no one is watching, Clark knees down and gr= abs=20 the grate, preparing to pull it up from the sidewalk. He's stopped, howeve= r, by=20 the appearance of a gun and a female police officer.=20

Sawyer: Stand up and put your hands over your head.=20

Clark glances up at the gun, which is aimed right at his face.=20

Sawyer: Stand up!=20

Clark slowly stands up and puts his hands over his head.=20

Sawyer: Turn around.=20

Clark does as he is asked as Sawyer starts to frisk him.=20

Clark: I can explain...=20

Sawyer: (Continuing to frisk him) Hold still...keep your= =20 fingers laced.=20

Satisfied that Clark isn't armed, Sawyer stands up and pulls him around= to=20 face her, still aiming her gun directly at him.=20

Sawyer: I'm listening.=20

Clark: My name is Clark Kent. My mom is one of the hostages bein= g held=20 up there.=20

Sawyer: (Harshly) And you thought you'd play hero? Well,= =20 assuming you are who you say you are, you almost just got your mother kill= ed.=20 Every opening in this building is wired with alarms. The kidnappers have c= ontrol=20 of the security system, and they threatened to start shooting hostages if = anyone=20 so much as sets a big toe inside. Come on hero. You're coming with me.=20

Clark hesitates, clearly not wanting to go.=20

Sawyer: Move it!=20

Clark, realizing he has no choice, follows Sawyer.=20

Inside the LuthorCorp offices, Bishop has completed cutting a hole in t= he=20 vault door. She pulls out a piece of metal, revealing the lock on the vaul= t.=20 Meanwhile, Nicky and Pine keep an eye on the hostages.=20

Nicky: (Concerned) So, what are we going to do? They saw = you=20 kill Kern. They can ID us, Pine. And I for one am not going down for murde= r, you=20 understand me?=20

Pine: (Unconcerned) We'll deal with them when the time co= mes.=20

As Pine and Nicky make their way over to Bishop and the vault, Lionel s= lowly=20 leans in to whisper in Martha's ear.=20

Lionel: (Whispered) I know what you're thinking. If I had= n't=20 asked you to work today, you'd be at home right now with your family.=20

Martha just shakes her head.=20

Martha: (Whispered) I don't blame you, Lionel. (tearfully= )=20 It's--it's just that Jonathan and I left on such bad terms.=20

Lionel: (Whispered) It's ironic. I had quite a row this m= orning=20 too, with Lex. If they kill us, those will be the last words we ever spoke= to=20 each other.=20

Martha just looks at Lionel, fearfully hoping he's not right.=20

Bishop begins drilling into the lock on the vault. Once she's finished,= she=20 steps back.=20

Bishop: Pine. You're up.=20

Pine heads over to the vault, picking up a crowbar and a canister of=20 chemicals off a nearby chair. He hands the crowbar to Bishop, attaches som= e sort=20 of thermostat to the vault, then begins spraying the chemical--which appea= rs to=20 be liquid nitrogen or some other chemical that is extremely cold--onto the= metal=20 where Bishop has just drilled. Martha looks on, trying to see what is happ= ening.=20 Once the thermostat gets up to near -300 degrees, Pine stops spraying the= =20 chemical and takes the crowbar from Bishop. He then hits the metal with th= e=20 crowbar, and the chilled metal breaks apart easily.=20

Pine twists the handle on the vault and opens the door. He and Bishop s= tep up=20 to the vault door, their faces becoming confused as they view the contents= .=20

Bishop: What the hell is this?=20

We pan into the vault to see it's contents--a flat cart stacked with ba= rs of=20 green meteor rocks. Pine shakes his head in answer to Bishop's question. M= artha=20 looks shocked as she sees what's inside and glances and Lionel, who simply= =20 strokes his beard and smirks.=20

Outside the building, Jonathan and Lex attempt to make their way throug= h the=20 crowd.=20

Jonathan: Excuse me. Excuse me.=20

The two men make their way to the makeshift police command center set u= p=20 outside. Police officers shout out commands about mointoring the building.= An=20 officer tries to stop Jonathan, but Lex waves him off.=20

Lex: It's OK. It's OK.=20

Jonathan spies Clark standing nearby with Sawyer and makes his way towa= rd=20 him.=20

Jonathan: Clark?=20

Sawyer: (Stepping between Jonathan and Clark) You know th= is=20 kid?=20

Jonathan: Yes Ma'am, he's my son.=20

Sawyer: Well, you keep him away from the building, or I'll arres= t him.=20

Jonathan nods in understanding and Lex steps forward, following Sawyer = as she=20 heads back to the command center.=20

Lex: Lieutenant Sawyer, my name is Lex Luthor....=20

Sawyer: (Interrupting, annoyed) I know who you are.=20

Lex steps in front of Sawyer, stopping her in her path.=20

Lex: I'd appreciate an update on the negotiations.=20

Sawyer: (Sighing) This way.=20

Sawyer leads Lex to the command center.=20

Jonathan and Clark step away from the crowd so they can speak about wha= t=20 happened.=20

Jonathan: What happened?=20

Clark: I've been listening to the police. I think I found a way = into=20 the building.=20

Jonathan: Really? How?=20

Clark: (Glancing up at a nearby building) Nobody's watchi= ng the=20 Daily Planet.=20

Clark and Jonathan both stare up at the Daily Planet building--the larg= e gold=20 globe atop it spinning slowly--which is right next to the LuthorCorp Tower= .=20

Jonathan: (Disbelief) You're not thinking about jumping.= =20

Clark: It's the only way.=20

Jonathan: (Concerned) Clark, that's got to be over 200 fe= et.=20

Clark: (False confidence) I can make it.=20

Jonathan: You don't know that. Besides, don't you have a fear of= =20 heights?=20

Clark: If we're not here to get Mom out then why *are* we here?= =20

Jonathan: (Seriously) Listen to me. I am just as concerne= d=20 about your mother as you are, but we can't afford to make a mistake that c= ould=20 get her killed.=20

Clark simply thinks about what his father has said as he continues to s= tare=20 up at the Daily Planet building.=20

Cut to a shot from a helicopter above LuthorCorp tower. It's now night,= and=20 the helicopter sweeps the building with its spotlight.=20

Inside the office, Bishop and Pine have removed the cart of meteor rock= s, and=20 are going through the other contents of the vault. Pine comes out with a s= tack=20 of blue file folders, and walks over to where Lionel and Martha are seated= on=20 the couch.=20

Pine: (Angry) Where's the damn money!=20

Lionel: (Calmly) I told you, there was nothing in there o= f=20 interest to you.=20

In anger and frustration, Pine tosses the file folders to the ground, w= here=20 they scatter across the floor. Meanwhile, Bishop comes out of the vault.=20

Bishop: Check this out.=20

As Pine turns to see what Bishop has found, Martha looks down at the fi= le=20 folders scattered at her feet. Her eyes widen with shock and fear as her e= yes=20 fall on a folder marked "Clark Kent: Confidential". She glances at Lionel = as if=20 to find an explaintion, but he just sits calmly, stroking his beard and st= aring=20 straight ahead.=20

Meanwhile, Bishop opens the glass cylinder she has found and removes it= 's=20 contents. It's the metal octagon disk from Clark's ship. She hands it over= to=20 Pine.=20

Bishop: It could be worth something.=20

Pine takes the disk and examines it curiously, then walks over to Lione= l. He=20 roughly grabs Lionel by the hair and yanks his head back.=20

Lionel: (In pain) Ahh!=20

Pine: (Holding the disk up in front of Lionel's face) Wha= t the=20 hell is this?=20

Lionel: (Grimacing in pain) Martha, perhaps the, uh, gent= leman=20 hasn't noticed that (Removes glasses) I'm blind. Would you mind tel= ling=20 me what he's referring to?=20

Martha: (Hesitantly) It's, uh, some sort of metallic disk= =20 shaped like an octagon.=20

Lionel: (Shaking his head) It's nothing... keepsake.=20

Pine releases Lionel and gets up, pocketing the disk. Martha stares at= =20 Lionel, her face a mix of anger and suspicion.=20

Outside, the helicopter continues to circle the building as Clark and=20 Jonathan stand with Sawyer inside the police command center. Sawyer's cell= phone=20 begins to ring.=20

Sawyer: (Answering her phone) Sawyer.=20

Pine: (Inside the office) Where is my transportation?=20

Sawyer: I told you, I need a show of good faith first. You give = me one=20 of those hostages.=20

Pine: Okay. Fine.=20

Pine pulls his gun out of his waistband and roughly grabs Martha off th= e=20 couch.=20

Pine:Get up!=20

Pine drags Martha over to the window, where she can be seen by the=20 helicopters. He points the gun at her head and speaks into his cell phone.= =20

Pine: You've got 10 minutes, then you can take this one out in a= body=20 bag.=20

Sawyer: We're working on it. Stay cool up there. Stay cool.=20

On the ground, Jonathan and Clark watch with fear and anger as they see= =20 Martha on the feed from the helicopter's camera.=20

Cut to a shot of the Daily Planet globe. We pan down and see the roof a= ccess=20 door open, and Clark step through. He checks to make sure no one is around= , then=20 slowly walks across the roof to the edge of the building. He peers over th= e edge=20 at the dizzying drop below, and looks sick and about to hyperventilate as = his=20 fear of heights kicks in. He steps back from the edge.=20

Cut to a shot of Lex on his cell phone down on the ground below.=20

Lex: Whatever you do, don't hurt any of the hostages. Just stay = calm.=20

Pine: (on his cell phone) Yeah, well how am I supposed to= stay=20 calm, huh? I open up that damn vault expecting to find my retirement fund,= and=20 instead I find a bunch of files, green rocks all cut up into bars!=20

Lex: (Curiously) What else was in there?=20

Pine: What's it to you?=20

Lex: (Computer distorted voice) Answer me, and maybe I ca= n help=20 you.=20

Pine: (Sighing in frustration) I--just what I told you. O= h, and=20 some metal octagon lookin' thing.=20

Down on the ground, a look of realization crosses Lex's face as he real= izes=20 what Lionel has.=20

Lex: (Seriously) Listen to me. Pack up everything--the fi= les,=20 the bars, the octagon.=20

Pine: Yeah, then what?=20

Lex: I know a way out of the building, but first you let the hos= tages=20 go.=20

Pine simply hangs up the phone. He turns the octagon between his finger= s a=20 few times, before slipping it into his pocket. Martha watches intently, ne= ver=20 taking her eyes off the disk.=20

Cut to a shot of Clark on the Daily Planet building. He backs up as far= as he=20 can, staring at the LuthorCorp Building. He breathes deeply several times,= =20 trying to work up the courage to make the jump.=20

Down on the ground, Jonathan stares up at the gap between the two build= ings.=20

Clark shakes his hands back and forth and bounces lightly on the balls = of his=20 feet, as if trying to gather his energy up into one explosive burst. Fear = and=20 determination mix on his face. Suddenly in a burst of super speed, he take= s off=20 toward the edge of the roof and flings himself into the chasm.=20

The shot goes into slow motion as Clark sails toward the LuthorCorp bui= lding,=20 his arms and legs flailing as if he were running. He gets a look of being = out of=20 control as he realizes he's going to crash into the LuthorCorp building.=20

Clark crashes through one of the windows, and lands against the office'= s=20 opposite wall, cracking the plaster in the process. He looks at the broken= =20 window, grinning widely with amazement at what he's done. He stands up qui= ckly,=20 knocking a painting off the wall as he stands, and heads out to find Marth= a.=20

In Lionel's office, the security system begins to beep, and Nicky rushe= s over=20 to check it.=20

Nicky: Pine. Better take a look at this. We got company.=20

Pine: (Examining the security system) Check it out.=20

Down on the ground, the police have also been alerted that the building= 's=20 security has been breeched, and the swat team rushes into action.=20

Sawyer: A window just blew out on the 30th floor. Get the team=20 together. We're going in. Let's go. Move it!=20

Lex, standing nearby, overhears the news and stares up at the LuthorCor= p=20 building, a confused expression on his face.=20

Inside the building, Nicky heads out of Lionel's office to investigate = the=20 security breech.=20

Down on the ground, Lex strides away from the action, talking into his = cell=20 phone.=20

Lex: (Demanding) What the hell's going on up there?=20

Pine: (On his cell phone) It sounds like the junk in that= safe=20 is worth something to you. Tell you what. I want a million dollars and I w= ant a=20 way out of here.=20

Lex: You're in no position to negotiate.=20

Pine: This is not a negotiation, all right? We get out of here o= r=20 nobody does.=20

Lex: All right, listen to me. Luthor has a private elevator. It'= s take=20 you to a tunnel that leads to a garage (Computer distorted voice over P= ine's=20 phone) three blocks away.=20

Pine looks over at Lionel.=20

Pine: Hey Lionel, you been holding out on me? Is there some kind= of=20 secret way out of here?=20

Lionel strokes his beard as Martha looks over at him.=20

Lionel: (Slightly amused) Oh, yes.=20

Pine holds the cell phone out as Lionel continues to talk. A look of=20 frustration crosses Lex's face as he hears Lionel's words over the cell-ph= one.=20

Lionel: And whatever that anonymous coward, your Mr. Green, is=20 offering... I'll double it. In exchange for our lives, and the contents of= the=20 safe.=20

Pine: Hmm. Hear that Mr. Green? Looks like we got us a bidding w= ar.=20

Lex: (Frustrated) Look, no matter what Lionel Luthor is=20 promising you, you can't trust him!=20

Pine: (Chuckling) Oh, but I should trust you--somebody wh= o=20 hides his own identity? I think I'd rather deal with Lionel.=20

Lex: (Desperate) I'll match what he's offering. Just don'= t hurt=20 them.=20

Pine's reaction is to simply hang up the cell-phone.=20

Down on the ground, Lex clicks off his cell-phone and looks around, his= =20 frustration and desperation beginning to mount as he feels the situation=20 spinning out of control. He starts to walk back toward the command center = when a=20 voice behind him stops him in his tracks.=20

Jonathan: (Off screen) Don't hurt *who*, Lex?=20

Lex turns around and sees Jonathan standing there, having heard the end= of=20 the conversation. Jonathan walks angrily toward him.=20

Jonathan: (Accusatory) Were you just talking to those men= up=20 there?=20

Lex: (Reassuringly) Mr. Kent, whatever I'm doing is in th= e best=20 interests of your wife and my father, believe me.=20

Lex starts to walk away, but Jonathan reaches out and grabs his arm, ro= ughly=20 swinging him back around so that he and Lex are face to face.=20

Jonathan: (Threateningly) If I find out you had *anything= * to=20 do with what's going on out there, you will pray to God that you never set= foot=20 in Smallville, you believe *me*.=20

Lex pulls his arm away from Jonathan, looks at him for a moment, and qu= ickly=20 walks back to the command center as Jonathan stares after him.=20

Inside the building, Nicky slowly makes his way through the hallways, g= un=20 drawn, looking for the intruder. Suddenly we hear a woosh, and the papers= =20 attached to a bulletin board near Nicky's head begin rustling wildly. Nick= y=20 turns around to find Clark has suddenly appeared behind him. Clark grabs N= icky=20 around the neck and shoves him against the wall, choking him.=20

Clark: (Desperate) Where's my mom? Where is she?!=20

Back inside the office, Lionel is negotiating the terms of their releas= e with=20 Pine, calmly, as if he were conducting a business meeting.=20

Lionel: (Matter of factly) So, as soon as the banks open,= I'll=20 have the money wired to, uh, any account you choose, anywhere in the world= .=20

Pine nods in agreement.=20

Pine: All right. We got a deal.=20

Lionel: Good.=20

Pine: But I'm hanging on to everything until I get that money.=20

Lionel: All right.=20

Pine walks over and grabs the cleaning cart the team had used to disgui= se all=20 the equipment they were bringing in.=20

Pine: Bishop, pack up the stuff in the vault.=20

Lionel: (Amused) So, now are you going to tell me who's o= n the=20 other line?=20

Pine: You'd probably know better than me. Why don't you think wh= o your=20 enemies are?=20

Lionel nods and chuckles.=20

Pine: (Aiming his gun at Martha) Come on lady, you can he= lp=20 out! Pick up the files! Come on!=20

Pine turns back to see how Bishop is doing. Martha gets on her knees an= d=20 begins gathering the files. She grabs the file marked Clark Kent, and afte= r=20 glancing over her shoulder to make sure Pine isn't watching, she begins to= open=20 it. Before she can see its contents, however, she hears Pine's gun click a= s he=20 aims it at her back.=20

Pine: (Angrily) Today. Come on! Pick 'em up, put 'em in t= he=20 barrel with the rest of the stuff!=20

Martha: (Fearful and meek) O-Okay. I'm picking them up...= =20

Martha gathers the files and tosses them in the barrel on the cart.=20

Pine: (Pushing Martha along) All right, that's good. Get = over=20 there and help your boss up.=20

Martha reaches out her arms to help Lionel to his feet.=20

Still seated, Lionel drops his glasses and Martha kneels to pick them u= p. As=20 she does do, Lionel leans down, pretending to attempt to pick up the glass= es,=20 and whispers to her.=20

Lionel: (Whispering) Martha. The octagonal disk--where is= it?=20

Martha: I don't know. Why is it so important?=20

Pine comes over and begins pushing the pair toward the door.=20

Pine: Come on, time's up. Let's go, move.=20

Cut to a shot of the building's circuit box. Clark opens it up and pull= s the=20 electrical circut wires out, causing the building to fall into darkness.=20

Pine: (As the power goes out) What the hell happened?=20

Bishop: (Fearful) The cops cut the power! We have got to = go!=20

Bishop runs toward the door.=20

Pine: Bishop, don't!=20

As Bishop reaches the doors, Clark throws the doors open and punches Bi= shop=20 in the face, sending her flying. She falls backwards into Pine, sending th= em=20 both tumbling to the ground. Pine drops his gun as he hits the ground, and= the=20 gun skates across the floor, landing near Lionel. Lionel cocks his head as= he=20 hears the gun landing nearby.=20

Martha: (Screaming with fear) Clark, get out of here now!= =20

The flatbed cart of meteor rocks begins to glow, and Clark staggers int= o the=20 room, then falls to the ground, grimacing in pain as the effects of the me= teor=20 rocks hit him. Lionel reaches for the gun, also looking in the direction o= f=20 Clark as he falls to the ground.=20

Martha: (Screaming desperately) Clark!=20

Clark lies on the ground, writhing and groaning. He stares at the cart = of=20 glowing rocks and tries to muster up the strength to get up, but he can't.= =20

Martha: (Screaming) Clark!=20

Outside, we hear the helicopter whirring, it's spotlight sweeping throu= gh the=20 room. Pine comes to and gets up, heading over to where Clark lies moaning = weakly=20 on the floor. Pine reaches down and grabs Clark by the shoulders.=20

Pine: (Demanding) Are you alone?=20

Martha glances over at the meteor rocks and sees her opportunity, while= Pine=20 continues to shake Clark roughly.=20

Pine: Answer me! Are you alone?=20

Martha rushes over and begins shoving the cart of meteor rocks back int= o the=20 vault. Pine looks up and sees what Martha is doing. He rushes over to stop= her=20 as Martha begins swinging the vault door shut. Pine reaches out to catch t= he=20 vault door, but his arm gets caught behind it. Martha shoves the vault doo= r=20 hard, and we hear crunching as the weight of the door breaks Pine's arm.=20

Pine: (Screaming with pain) Arghhhh!=20

Martha reaches out and shoves the injured Pine against a wall, then pus= hes=20 the vault completely closed. She then rushes over to where Clark is lying= =20 helplessly on the ground.=20

Martha: Clark! Clark!=20

Clark begins to regain his strength to as Martha kneels next to him, ch= ecking=20 to see if he's OK.=20

Martha: Clark, are you alright?=20

Pine: (Off screen) Lady, you and the kid get up!=20

Martha and Clark glance up to see Pine on the other side of the room. H= e's=20 holding Lionel hostage, and has a running drill aimed directly at Lionel's= =20 temple.=20

Pine: Put your hands over your head or I kill the old man.=20

Martha looks on in fear. Clark uses his superspeed and rushes over, kno= cking=20 the drill out of Pine's hands. Clark grabs Pine's shirt as Pine grabs him,= =20 preparing to punch him. Suddenly, a gunshot rings out. Pine's eyes go wide= , and=20 he groans as he slowly sinks to the ground. Clark looks on with shock, the= n=20 looks up to see Lionel standing behind Pine, holding Pine's gun. Clark sta= res at=20 Lionel, who continues to aim the gun toward where Pine had just been stand= ing.=20 Martha rushes over and checks on Pine.=20

Martha: He's dead.=20

Clark kneels down next to Martha as Lionel turns and sets the gun down = on the=20 edge of the desk.=20

Martha looks over at the cleaning cart, where the barrel of files still= =20 remain. She leans in and whispers to Clark.=20

Martha: (Urgently) Clark! Those files over there--burn th= em.=20 There's one about you. We can't let it get out.=20

Clark gets up and takes a couple of steps toward the cart. He aims his = heat=20 vision and soon the files burst into flames, including his file, which is = right=20 on top.=20

While Clark's back is turned, Martha leans over Pine. She pulls the oct= agonal=20 disk from Pine's pocket, and quickly slides it into her own pocket before = anyone=20 can see what she's doing.=20

The police quickly burst through the door, guns drawn.=20

Sawyer: Metropolis PD! Nobody move!=20

Martha and Clark put their hands up as the police rush in to secure the= room.=20 Sawyer spies Clark. He looks at her sheepishly as she simply sighs and sha= kes=20 her head.=20

Cut to a shot of the lobby of LuthorCorp. Martha rushes ahead of the po= lice=20 and Clark and Lionel, throwing open the door and rushing out into the stre= et.=20 She spies Jonathan and runs over, throwing herself into his arms. Jonathan= lifts=20 her off the ground as they embrace tightly, then begin to kiss tenderly.=20 Jonathan cups her face, silently asking if she is OK. She nods, and fights= back=20 tears. Jonathan lets out a huge sigh and fights back tears as well. They b= oth=20 laugh in relief, as Clark looks on, smiling.=20

Lex: (Approaching Clark) Clark, how did you get inside?=20

Before Clark can answer, Lionel walks up, reaching out for Clark. He fi= nds=20 him and puts his hand on Clark's shoulder.=20

Lionel: The boy's resourceful, Lex. What difference does it make= how=20 he did it? He saved us. That's what's important.=20

Clark smiles nervously at Lionel's words.=20

Lex reaches over and removes Lionel's hand from Clark's shoulder, and t= urns=20 him away from Clark. Lionel shrugs Lex's hand off his arm.=20

Lex: Dad. I want you to know I was doing everything I could to s= ecure=20 your release.=20

Lionel: (Disbelieving) Oh, I'm sure you did a great deal.= =20

Lionel pauses, the tension thick. Lex's expression reveals he knows Lio= nel=20 feels Lex has disappointed him once again.=20

Lionel: I'll send someone to the mansion for my things.=20

Lionel turns away from Lex.=20

Lex: I'll help them pack.=20

A man comes up to help Lionel, and Lionel takes his arm.=20

Lionel: Thank you, thank you.=20

Lionel allows the man to lead him away. Lex turns and watches Clark and= his=20 family embracing before they turn and walk away, leaving Lex standing on t= he=20 sidewalk all alone. Lex puts his hands in his coat pockets and slowly lowe= rs his=20 head, looking away from the Kents and their happy reunion.=20

Cut to a shot of the Kent kitchen. Martha comes down the stairs, a pape= r in=20 her hand. She walks over to where Clark is pouring Jonathan a cup of coffe= e, and=20 extends the paper toward Jonathan.=20

Jonathan: (Curiously taking the paper) What's that?=20

Martha: It's my resignation. There's no way I can keep working f= or=20 Lionel. He had refined meteor rocks in his vault, a file on Clark...I can'= t=20 believe I trusted him.=20

Clark: Without that file, at least the police can't find out any= thing=20 about me.=20

Martha: To think I made this job such a big priority, and Lionel= may=20 have only hired me to learn more about Clark.=20

Clark: (Guiltily) I'm sorry, Mom. I know how important yo= ur=20 work has been to you.=20

Martha: (Shaking her head) It's not more important than y= ou.=20

Jonathan: (Studying Martha's resignation) Wait. Are you s= ure=20 that this is the best thing to do? Quit, I mean.=20

Martha: (Incredulously) What do you mean? I thought *you'= d* be=20 happy about it.=20

Jonathan: If you hadn't been working for Lionel, then we'd have = no way=20 of knowing that he was keeping tabs on Clark.=20

A look of realization crosses Martha's face as she realizes what Jonath= an's=20 thinking.=20

Martha: So, instead of staying away from him...=20

Jonathan: Maybe we should take a page out of the Luthor playbook= .=20

Martha, Jonathan, and Clark all share a look as they realize this is th= e best=20 way to protect Clark's secrets.=20

Cut to a shot of the Kent Farm at night. We see a shot of the spaceship= , and=20 focus in on the missing piece, which fades to a shot of the octagonal disk= =20 sitting on the kitchen table.=20

Martha reaches out and picks up the disk. She studies it. From behind h= er,=20 Jonathan pokes his head into the kitchen and calls out to her.=20

Jonathan: Sweetheart, are you coming up.=20

Martha quickly hides the disk behind her back.=20

Martha: (Smiling) In a minute.=20

Jonathan smiles, and heads out of the kitchen. Martha pulls the disk fr= om=20 behind her back and studies it once again. She then grabs a large canister= of=20 flour from the counter and opens it. She buries the octagonal disk deep wi= thin=20 the flour, covering it up so the flour looks undisturbed, and closes the=20 canister=20

Martha then kneels down and opens the cabinets underneath. She takes th= e=20 canister of flour and hides it among the other canisters in the cabinet an= d=20 closes the cabinet doors.=20
