Opening Credits Ah, hell. Isn't it lovely? These are all my little
souls. I used to gather them myself, but by the fourteenth century I needed some
help. That's how I found Morgan. He was a monk back then so he played hard to
get, but I've found that with the right bait, you can catch any fish you want.
In the end, he came to work for me, he became a collector. Then recently, he made me
the most interesting proposal. He wants to seek salvation for his clients. I
decided to let him try.... for now.
- Narrator/Nuremburg Devil (Colin Cunningham)
He made a deal with the Devil six centuries ago and
now he’s changing the rules.
Morgan Pym appears to be in his mid-30s, but was in fact born in 1322 AD, in
Nuremberg.
In his native land, he was a monk who fell in love with a servant girl
(Katrina) who lived near the monastery. Just as he revealed his love to her,
Katrina came down with the plague. Enraged at God, Morgan sold his soul to the
Devil in exchange for 10 years of happiness with Katrina. But when the time was
up, Katrina became ill once again and died.
Distraught, Morgan fought back against the Devil and was offered a deal; he
could escape his trip to Hell if he would agree to collect souls from others who
had dealt with the Devil.
Six centuries later, he is still tormented: no sleep, no friends, and one
call a week with a name of someone in the city of Vancouver. (The Devil has
Collectors in every city in the world). Morgan’s simple task - to locate the
person and let them know there are only 48 hours remaining until their precious
10 years is up. Why the early warning? The Devil enjoys a good laugh, and
watching people squirm for the last 48 hours is one of his great pleasures.
Inspired by a pretty young junkie named Maya, Morgan challenges the Devil to
renegotiate his contract once again, by asking for the chance to redeem some of
the damned souls in the last 48 hours of their existence. The Devil, intrigued
by having a wild card in his otherwise predictable omnipotent existence, agrees
to Morgan's request.
Buoyed by his friend, the young Maya, and pursued by a suspicious
investigative reporter, Jeri, Morgan's mission is to prove that everyone, no
matter what they've done, can earn redemption… and perhaps one day that may also
include him.

The Story: "Beginnings" juxtaposes two stories: the Devil's initial
training of Morgan as the first collector, and Morgan's memories of the
beginning of his 10 years with Katrina. In the course of the episode we see the
origin of the memories, both tender and troubling, that maintain Morgan's
humanity even after Katrina's death, and also the Devil's nearly-successful
first strike in snuffing out that humanity completely.
Comments: The third of the 3 episodes shot in Budapest. Chris Kramer
and Gabe Hogan had their first sword-fighting lesson in the meeting room at the
hotel where cast and crew were staying.
