Jack Clayton (Tony Danza) is hardly the type to believe in holiday magic: he's a burglar who can't resist a good heist. On the run from the police after a Chicago bank robbery gone awry, Jack hops the first bus out of the city and winds up in the small town of Evergreen. It's there that he meets Sarah Gibson (Lea Thompson) and her daughter Noelle (Angela Goethals), who mistake Jack for the Santa Claus they've hired to promote their family Christmas tree farm. Jack decides to play along with the misunderstanding and extend his stay in Evergreen, reluctantly taking on the role of the local Santa while he cases the Evergreen Savings and Loan for his next big job. But as Christmas Eve approaches, encounters with a kindly local shop owner (Betty White) and the realization that he is growing close to Sarah and Noelle throw Jack into turmoil, as he finds himself caught between his criminal past and the temptation to go legit.
