Set in the charged atmosphere of big city crime, corruption and poverty, Da
Vinci's Inquest focuses on provocative and complex Vancouver city coroner
Dominic Da Vinci, a man who's committed to being the voice of the dead.
Something of a maverick, Da Vinci is a former narcotics cop, who, despite coming
from a non-medical background, was wooed into the coroner's office and now
wields power to pursue and expose the truth behind a death. Vancouver is an
international port city – with all the big city problems, including an
unstoppable drug trade, a rampant HIV epidemic and a growing population of
street people, teen runaways and prostitutes. It's the flip side of the tourist
postcard, and as one of Vancouver's coroners Da Vinci deals on a daily basis
with its escalating problems.
Da Vinci's mandate goes beyond homicide to the prevention of all death. Every
death must be investigated and ruled on. From the almost daily drug overdoses to
teen suicides, fatal fires, and floating bodies, Da Vinci is the first person at
the scene and the last person to rule on how death occurred. His is a complex
world, where murder might turn out to be accident, suicide could be revealed as
homicide, and the motivations of those involved and those investigating are
rarely clear.
Da Vinci works closely with the police departments, the legal system, and the
forensic pathology unit. His aggressive style, intolerance for bureaucracy, and
chaotic private life make him more enemies than friends. He's a headache for his
boss, chief coroner James Flynn and a thorn in the side for Police Sergeant
Regan. However, his commitment, his instincts, his expertise, and his huge
talent for his work are indispensable. Despite his flaws, Da Vinci is
charismatic, and his passion for the truth sparks his colleagues -- the intense,
young detective, Mick Leary and Mick's seasoned, street-smart partner Leo
Shannon, and the pathologists who work in the morgue, including Sunny Raman, and
the chief pathologist, his ex-wife, Patricia Da Vinci.
Constantly in the political hot seat, and under the media spotlight, Da Vinci
is publicly known for his passion for justice and his hardball, provocative and
sometimes antagonistic attitude. Privately, he understands better than most the
ambiguities of life and the complexity of individual motivation. His
insecurities, his struggle with alcohol addiction, and unresolved grief make him
vulnerable, but he has a deep sense of humanity that fuels his passion.
