BIG SOUND is a wickedly funny satire set in the big-money,
bigger-ego, music business that follows the day-to-day exploits of successful,
but disillusioned music manager. Bill Sutton is used to success, money and life
at the top of this gold-plated dunghill. Recently however, he’s begun to feel
the tinge of age dulling his edge, and a creeping emptiness shadowing his life.
He’s surrounded by naked ambition at the agency, and embattled by capricious
talent. Now he’s unexpectedly struggling to survive in a business that is
nothing but mayhem, reminded daily that in the ‘Music Biz’ over thirty is
“over-the-hill.” He’s caught.
Jessie, his ‘out-in-left-field’ right-hand office gal is
deeply devoted and ever anxious to help, but she can’t protect him from either
the sharks who circle below or from the mystifying whims of the BIG SOUND owner
Gabe Moss. Nor can she shield him from the almost constant arbitrary, eccentric,
neurotic and just plain strange demands of the talent he represents.
There’s Melissa Etheridge, whose heart is set on an obscure
photography process for her latest album cover. Then there’s Randy Bachman who
just wants him to keep some pet fish alive, and MC Hammer, who is frantic about
a 90-lb. weakling stalker fan. Stewart Copeland wants him to make jam, Jann
Arden wants his support for an ill-advised makeover and John Hampson wants a
disease, any disease, to raise his profile.
This constant parade of needy talent all want a piece of
him, while almost everyone else at BIG SOUND wants to be him, from Nick Keester
who thrills to the ‘game’ and openly tries to out manouevre him, to Donna, who
just wants to get ahead.
There’s no relief in his private life either. Bill’s
teenage daughter Phoebe thinks she has all the answers, is increasingly
rebellious against all constraints, and wants a career in the very business that
he feels is strangling him. His ex-wife Michelle is civilized in public, but
still harbours a grudge against Bill for their failed marriage. She never fails
to land a barbed jab when she can, and Bill seems unable to truly connect with
another woman. It may be a dog-eat-dog world, but for Bill there’s always the
love of the music and the occasional shining moment when he uncovers raw talent.
His shining world may be dulling, but Bill’s still got ‘it’ and he’ll hold onto
it against all odds.

It is Phoebe's 15th birthday and Michelle goes all out with
a present of studio recording time, pre-arranged by Keester. Bill will do
anything to stop his daughter from joining the music business rat race, but he
can’t stop himself from a little one-upmanship over his ex-wife. However, this
time he may have gone too far when Keester incites some family strife.
In an attempt to increase record sales and improve sales
in the U.S., Jann Arden agrees to an image makeover involving over-the-top

Bill Sutton's waning career can't withstand another
desertion, so he's desperate to keep a huge client like Melissa Etheridge happy,
at any cost. Her current whim is an album cover shot in ultraviolet, a medium
that only bees can register, and only one photographer can shoot. Always poised
to take Bill down to become king of the Big Sound heap, Nick Keester would jump
through any hoops to outmaneuver Bill and steal his clients. Further
complicating things, Bill's girlfriend Rebecca manipulates a reluctant Bill into
giving her a key to his apartment. Meanwhile, Bill's daughter Phoebe is a
nervous wreck over her talent show. Bill has promised he'll be there, but his
daughter stopped taking his word for anything years ago. When the pressure gets
to Bill and he is caught on tape vandalizing Keeser’s car, the threat of
blackmail spices up the battle.

Bill manages to steal Osuto, "the world's best ultraviolet
photographer," right from under Keester's nose. But Nick Keester is not a man to
give up easily, particularly if it means winning favour with Big Sound boss Gabe
Moss. In this bitter battle, every little bit helps. A befuddled Osuto is swept
from the talent show into Jesse's arms as Bill attempts to woo Toby, a young
performer at the talent show who may turn into his next big "discovery". Bill's
assistant Jessie is going beyond the call of duty, in more ways than one, and
even the manipulating Donna, who is scheming her way up the Big Sound ladder,
seems prepared to pitch in. But in his efforts to keep Keester from winning it
all, Bill is letting things slip, including paying attention to his daughter,
keeping his girlfriend happy and looking after an aquarium of exotic fish given
to him by Randy Bachman.

Trevor Finian’s fans have waited two years to see him
perform live again. Stage fright immobilized him in the past, but the legendary
rock star assures Bill that he’s conquered his fears. All goes well until Trevor
does the pre-concert sound check, gets jittery, and seeks out Bill for
reassurance. Meanwhile, The Drips, Keester’s hot new band, have just released
their first EP and the fifteen minutes Bill has allotted them as Trevor’s
opening act just isn’t enough exposure for Keester’s schemes. A few well-chosen
words later, Trevor has barricaded himself in Bill’s office, refusing to go to
his comeback concert. Between hands of an office poker game, the Big Sound gang
all pitch in to try and "counsel" Trevor out of his panic attack.

Bill and the gang at Big Sound try to cure a rock star of
his debilitating stage fright, while Keester capitalizes on the singer's fears
to place his own clients centre stage.
