Below
is Colin's thank you letter to his fan club.
To all of the CC FANS.
Awesome.
Outrageous.
Absolutely brilliant.
After numerous
reschedules over the last 8 months, I finally took part in my wonderful
birthday gift that you all presented me with last year. A day of speed and
instruction from Danny McKeevers Racing School out at the Willowsprings
Raceway.
And it was, truly...
one hell of a day.
Started the night
before when my good buddy Rob Stilson and I decided to drive up early (2
hour drive from LA) and grab a Motel to get a better start on everything
the next morning. Michelle Munro met Rob at the premier of Elektra in Las
Vegas and convinced him to go with me and 'document' the whole experience
(which basically consists of smart ass comments and slanderous critique
coming through loud and clear, while I'm alone in my car trying to stay
alive.)
Anyway, we checked into
the local Motel, snuck Piper into the room and soon my thoughts were
drifting off into the worlds of Michael Shumaker, AJ Foyt and Jackie
Stewart. I wasn't scared, but I suppose I was a little nervous. ('Scared'
was seeing Rob in his cotton briefs, but I digress.)
The morning came,
alarms went off, we hopped into the truck and headed for the track which
was about ten minutes away.
We were met by Danny
himself. He introduced his staff and immediately both Rob and I were taken
by how incredibly cool and warm the people were. (By coincidence Rob had
actually met and driven with Danny way back when.) Danny was more than
happy that Rob 'hang out' with the cameras, and so after a little bit of
book learning and theory, all of us 'students' were allocated cars (me
gettum yellow one) and we all headed off for the track.
Hard to describe the
day after that. There was just so much happening from then on. I mean,
your brain shuts everything else down except for the mechanics of how to
stay on the road at an accelerated speed. In that half second of
downshifting from 4th to 3rd coming into the second turn at 70 miles an
hour, you're really not thinking, "Hmmm. What words might be best in
articulating this particular experience?"
But at the end of the
day, I 'can' say that I was exhausted. Eight straight hours of rpm's,
adrenalin, sunshine and Rob Stilson giving me the 'you suck' signal every
time I passed the race tower. It was awesome. And I was absolutely blown
away by the whole experience.
Within the next few
hours, both the adrenaline and sunshine had passed. It would be yet
another exceptional memory provided to me by a group of people who have
been so incredibly kind to me. People I barely even know. And so, the
adrenaline was replaced with gratitude, humility and appreciation for such
an amazing day. An amazing gift.
Thank you all again,
from the bottom of my heart.
Just incredible.
Sincerely,
Colin Cunningham
