Ask Colin: January 9, 2003
Q&A with Colin and members of the
ColinCunninghamFans Yahoo! Group
Any chance that we'll see you in England anytime soon?? Just asking
: ) (Caity - ashleighese)
Would love to come out to England. If anything, just to meet Kim
McGreal. She helped create the original fan club and web site. But I'd
also like to do a Con out there, but it doesn't look like the people at
Wolf events seems to give a crap, and so... we shall see.
As the ultimate entertainer, do you enjoy doing cons... you know
audience feedback and all, or are you more of a t.v (interview) man ?? (Caity - ashleighese)
I absolutely love the Cons. They are such a blast, the people are
great and I've such wonderful memories because of them. Though I will say
that 'appearing' at the conventions does go against my 'philosophy' of
being an actor. On a professional level, I tend to shy away from the idea
of letting an audience get to 'know' me. As an actor, the only real
danger out there is losing control of your anonymity. And once an
audience gets to know you on a more intimate level, they lose perspective
on your work. Performances that suck, all of a sudden become, "You were
GREAT!" And an amazing performance can be reduced to, "That totally
sucked. I met that guy once and I couldn't stand him." So, it's a tough
call, because I really do love to do cons, and interviews, but I have to
be extremely careful, especially with the interviews. Because I have some
opinions on things that I'm sure someone out there completely disagrees
with. And so, I remind myself that I'm just an actor, to shut my mouth and
simply be glad I'm employed.
I saw your interview on the Vicki Gaburrrrrrrrrrrrth... um,
whatever, show. Is it just me or did you loose your temper with that
woman? You looked very composed, but I was ready to strangle her! A cross
between Anne Robinson and Simon Cowell. (Caity - ashleighese)
Nah, Vicki was great. She's a really nice lady and I had a blast doing
the show.
Thanks for the questions.
Are there any types of roles you would not take?
(Eileen - hostziggynj)
Gratuitous rape scenes and alcohol commercials.
What is your dream role? (Eileen - hostziggynj)
The next one.
If you hadn't gone into acting, what one thing would have been your
passion, and why? (Heather - treefrog999)
Tough one. Hopefully something inside the biz. Perhaps music. But if
outside the biz? Speech writer for the President or perhaps a river
rafting guide.
What's in your pockets right now? <g> (Heather -
treefrog999)
An Australian fifty dollar bill. Forty Australian cents. Four American
dollars. Drivers license. Bank card. Phone book. Auto Club Card. Food
reciept and a Chap Stick.
Do you have a favourite genre you prefer to work in? Also, do you
prefer movies, television or the theatre? (Heather -
treefrog999)
No preference, so long as the material is good. Same goes for the
medium, but favoring FILM.
Are you going to Gatecon2003? - And are you aware that a certain
Douglas Arthurs has left you a very X-rated message on our camcorder at
SG-5 after hearing about your video message at the wrap-up party at this
year's con? (Kez - kenai_alpha)
Nothing confirmed on Gatecon as of yet. And no clue as to x-rated
messages on your camcorder. Though I could show a few of my own, wink
wink.
What is your favourite and most unusual item you have in your home? (Kez - kenai_alpha)
I have an old antique Bar Man, who (when you push a button) comes to
life, mixes a martini, drinks it and then begins to turn red with smoke
coming out of his ears. Great little antique.
What is the most unusual thing someone has asked you to autograph? (Kez - kenai_alpha)
A guy once asked me to autograph his dog.
Hi Colin Hope you had a great Christmas :) If you could play a
character in Stargate (apart from Major Davis) who would it be and why? (Laura Birkin - laura_birkin)
I think the part of Daniel would be the closest to my heart. I'd
actually auditioned for the role when the series first started, though I
must say that Michael's shoes would most certainly be unfillable.
Have you done your part in 'Smallville' yet and what is the part? If
so, what was it like to work with another maniac, being Michael 'Lex'
Rosenbaum? - And can I have his phone number? VBG.
(Lea Connor - lea_c2000)
Extremely small part on Smallville. Basically played 'henchman number
4'. I took the job primarily because it looked like fun, I hadn't done the
show before, and Christmas was coming up. And no, I don't have his phone
number, though I do have his credit card, perhaps we could all go
shopping?
What was it like working with Arnie on the 6th Day? (Lea Connor - lea_c2000)
Great guy. Really liked the man. My father is a champion body
builder, as was Arnie, and so we know alot of the same names from that old
sub culture. Good guy. He has my respect.
Have you, Amanda and JR found a play to do together yet? And when
you do, you must come to the West End to perform it!
(Lea Connor - lea_c2000)
Workin' on that. I think it would be a blast.
Will you have cats with me? (Martje - starlingnl)
Of course. I'll fire up the BBQ and you can bring a nice Cianti.
Read Pratchett yet? *evil grin* (Martje -
starlingnl)
Ahhh. No actually. Still working on getting around to that.
I was telling a friend that your sexy little car is a 1956 Porsche
Roadster. He ‘claims’ that there is no such thing. He says that in 1956
the 356 was a Speedster not a Roadster. Between 1954 - 1958 the Porsche
was a Speedster. In 1959 it was a Convertible D. Between 1960 - 1962 it
was a Roadster. He even looked it up on the internet to prove it to me
(www.356registry.org/tech/guide/index.html). Could you please confirm
what year and model your Porsche is, so that I can prove to him that he
(and the internet) was wrong? :-) (Michelle -
meshel_luvs_cc)
Well, he's mostly right. But not entirely. The Speedster was
technically ONLY imported to California in those years. But there was a
Roadster model, which was technically the same as the Speedster only with
two small changes. The wind shield was higher and it had roll up windows
as opposed to plastic flaps. No point in getting into it with him. There
were a number of unique Porches that were made in very small quantities,
or in proto type that never made the main stream.
In an online Q&A (Dec 2001) you were asked “What is the best book
you've read in the past few months?” You answered “Speak - by Laurie
Anderson.......wonderful.” A couple of months ago I went to Borders and
looked for this book. I couldn’t find it on the shelves so I asked the guy
at the info counter if they had it. He told me it was in the “teenage”
section and I was like “Excuse me, did you say teenage?” and he nodded and
pointed towards the back of the store. And in the middle of the Sweet
Valley High and Nancy Drew novels, there it was. LOL. Did you really read
this book or were you just ‘messing with our heads’? What is your current
favourite book? (Michelle - meshel_luvs_cc)
No I was not pulling your legs. It was in fact 'Speak'. And I simply
adored it. I read all sorts of books when I'm in the zone for reading, and
I make no distinction between 'Teen', 'Adult', whatever. Just good and
bad. And 'Speak' was good. At least I thought so. And currently, I've
been reading a lot of Wyndham. Short stories, but great fun. The
Crysilids. Midwich Cookoos. etc.
I read that THE METHOD is scheduled to start shooting in March
2003. Is this still the plan? What is your involvement in this movie?
Are you able to give us a hint as to what the movie is about and who will
be starring in it? (Michelle - meshel_luvs_cc)
Not sure about March, but definitely this year. And no, never feel
comfortable talking about a project. It compromises the energy needed to
get it done. Sorry. And no news yet as to its cast. But thanks for
asking.
Colin, have you noticed any difference in the amount or type of
parts that are coming your way at all since you have become so well known
from Stargate SG-1? (Pam - SG14Life@aol.com)
No. I don't think so. Still just workin away as I always have.
What type of music do you like to play & what types do you like to
listen to? (Pam - SG14Life@aol.com)
I like the kind of music that has a measure of 'depth' to it. I know
that's hard to define, but I guess I'm just not a fan of 'marketed' music.
Pop and other corporate product just doesn't interest me. I'm far too
aware of how it all gets manufactured and then pushed into the ears and
eyes of the layman consumer. Don't watch tv. Little on the radio interests
me anymore. It's all the same rehashed wank.
Two-parter: What do you like to do to relax (seriously)? And the
question on everyone's mind, do you have a girlfriend at present and if so
what does she think of all the fan adoration? (Pam -
SG14Life@aol.com)
Relaxing? Palm Springs, California. That's really the only thing I
think that brings me into myself. Anywhere else, I'm a product of my
environment and it's tough to ground out And as for a 'girlfriend'? Yes, I
am seeing someone. Great gal. And she knows little and could care even
less about the 'biz', fandom and the like. That's probably her greatest
attribute to me. She knows nothing of Stargate, or Big Sound or Twilight
Zone or whatever. She doesn't watch tv and knows nothing of me other than
what she sees and feels. It's simple, honest and refreshing.
What is your charity of choice? and would you do crazy things to
raise money for them? (Sammy - sammya27)
Still no charity as of yet. I know that sounds crude and crazy, it's
just that if I'm going to back something, I really want to have that
ownership. I've honed it down, will tell soon. And as for crazy things,
hmmm. Any suggestions?
What's the best thing about living in Vancouver? (Sammy
- sammya27)
The work.
Do you give blood or bone marrow, or both? If not, why not? (YEP we
now want you blood!) (Sammy - sammya27)
Blood. Yes. Bone marrow no. Gave 'platelets' once when I was broke and
in need of rent money. Not sure if I'll ever do that again. Whoa.
I'm studying to be an actress right now (almost finished with
classes) and am looking to work up in Vancouver. I live here in Seattle,
and know that the market up there is great. :) With you being a U.S.
citizen, how were you able to get your start working up there and do you
have any tips on what I can do? Thanks a bunch! :)
(Shell - majorrobbins)
Call Immigration Canada. The Consulate etc. and get the paper work.
It's not easy, but a hell of a lot easier than a Canadian going for their
US papers. And yes, I could offer tips, but I'm not all that comfortable
giving them out over the net. But, you don't need them. Read all the info,
put it together and don't be afraid to do a little thinking for yourself.
You'll be fine. If there is a will. There is a career waiting for you in
Vancouver. Don't give up.
Hey Colin! I was just wondering if you'll be performing in the 2003
Vancouver Fringe Festival? (Shell - majorrobbins)
Don't think so. At least not as Producer. Last one almost killed me.
Hello from the UK. My friend Anna and I are currently watching and
enjoying the brilliant 'Beggars & Choosers', but there's one question we
just gotta ask. In that '3 in a bed' scene from 'The Cherry Orchard part
2'. Can you explain Herb's hairy chest?! After all, in 'Dead Fire' -
smooth chested and in the pix from Gatecon - same. So can you explain this
anomaly? You can plead the 5th if you want! (Yvonne -
ruthiescotuk)
That was in fact MY hairy chest. Well, maybe not all of it. I had some
added for effect. I've got some hair on my chest, but had to shave it to
match the stunt man on Dead Fire. (Didn't seem fair to ask him to grow
some, so I simply grabbed a razor).
What does Major Davis carry around in his briefcase? Aside from
spare panty hose..... (Yvonne - ruthiescotuk)
Two issues of Swank Magazine. A bottle of Gilbeys. Three Cheese
sandwiches. And a gold tooth.
Hi Colin. How many bandannas do you have? Can you describe them?! (Yvonne - ruthiescotuk)
Black, Green, Red, Blue. Cloth. Soft. And at this particular moment,
a little too tight. I just went blind.
Thanks one and all
~ Colin
